How Goat Price Is Calculated
Live-weight pricing means you pay the rate per kilogram multiplied by the goat's weight on the scale. Dressed weight — the meat left after slaughter — is roughly 45 to 50% of live weight in a good Boer cross, which is why butchers quote a much higher rate per kg than farms do.

Live weight vs dressed weight
These two numbers get confused constantly, and the confusion is where farmers lose money.

Weigh the goat
On a platform scale if possible. Insist on seeing this done.
Confirm the rate and the grade
Agree the breeding percentage and the rate per kg before weighing, not after.
Multiply
Live weight × rate per kg = animal price.
Add transport separately
Delivery is a separate cost and depends on district and quantity.
Estimating weight without a scale
If no scale is available, measure the chest girth — the distance right around the body just behind the front legs — with a tape. Girth is closely related to body weight, so it gives a workable estimate. Measure with the goat standing square and calm, and treat the result as an approximation, not a substitute for a scale.

Signs a quoted price is not fair
- The seller refuses to weigh the animal in front of you.
- The percentage is asserted but no parent records or buck details can be shown.
- The goat was fed and watered heavily just before weighing — gut fill can add 2–3 kg of nothing.
- The rate is far below the band for its claimed percentage. That usually means the percentage is overstated.
- Transport is quoted as included but no district or date is confirmed in writing.
