Goat Vaccination Calendar
The core vaccines for goats in Nepal are PPR, foot and mouth disease (खोरेत) and enterotoxemia. PPR is the most important — it is the biggest killer of goats in Nepal and one annual dose prevents it. Vaccinate before the monsoon where possible, and never vaccinate a sick animal.

Rules that apply to every vaccination
- Never vaccinate a sick animal. Wait until it has recovered — a vaccine given during illness may not work and adds stress.
- Deworm before vaccinating where possible. A heavily parasitised goat mounts a weaker immune response.
- Keep the cold chain. Most vaccines are ruined by heat. Carry them cool and use them promptly.
- Use a clean needle and change it regularly. Reusing a dirty needle spreads infection through the herd.
- Vaccinate in the cool part of the day, early morning or evening.
- Write down the date, the vaccine and which animals got it. Without records you will lose track within a season.
New animals arriving on the farm
Most disease outbreaks arrive with a newly purchased goat. Quarantine is the cheapest insurance available on a livestock farm.
Keep new arrivals separate for 3 to 4 weeks
In a pen with no shared fence line, feeder or water with the main herd.
Watch daily for fever, diarrhoea, coughing and nasal discharge
Take temperatures if anything looks off.
Deworm on arrival
New animals frequently bring in parasites — including drug-resistant ones.
Vaccinate if their history is unknown
Ask for records; assume nothing if none are produced.
Only then move them in
Introduce them to the herd after the quarantine period ends with no signs of illness.
Building a routine you will keep
A schedule only works if it is written where you will see it. Put a sheet on the shed wall with the month down one side and vaccination, deworming and weighing across the top, and tick it off. It costs nothing and prevents the most expensive mistake in goat farming — forgetting.
- PPR vaccination — once a year, same month each year
- FMD vaccination — pre-monsoon
- Enterotoxemia — kids at about 3 months, booster 3–4 weeks later
- Deworming — on a schedule suited to your area, heavier attention in the monsoon
- Eyelid colour check — monthly
- Weigh five marked animals — monthly
- Hoof trimming — as needed, more often in wet conditions
